Should You Start a Tech Company at 65? Molecular Insights into Terrorism and Tumors

Prof. Dr. Rainer Herges is Professor Emeritus of Organic Chemistry at Kiel University and a leading expert in organic, supramolecular, and computer-assisted chemistry. After completing his PhD at the Technical University of Munich and postdoctoral research with Nobel Laureate George A. Olah at the University of Southern California, he established an internationally recognized research career at the interface of synthesis, theory, and molecular design.

During his tenure as Chair of the Otto Diels Institute of Organic Chemistry at Kiel University, he pioneered concepts including coarctate reactions, the visualization of aromaticity through ACID (Anisotropy of the Current-Induced Density), Möbius aromatic compounds, and switchable molecular systems for applications ranging from molecular machines to magnetic resonance imaging.

His scientific contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Adolf-von-Baeyer-Denkmünze of the German Chemical Society (GDCh), the Science Award of the City of Kiel, and the Emanuel-Vogel-Lecture. He has held visiting professorships at renowned institutions worldwide, including Stanford University, MIT, the University of Melbourne, the IOCB Prague, and the University of New South Wales in Sydney.

Beyond academia, Prof. Herges is actively involved in translating scientific discoveries into applications. He is founder of QuantView, improving MRI imaging f.e. with new tracers, and of herges detection, a company focusing on explosives detection technologies.

He continues to contribute to the advancement of chemistry through research, international collaborations, and scientific exchange.
