Two CSMB Members Involved in Extended Clusters of Excellence
Prof. Claudia Draxl, a principal investigator in the Berlin Mathematics Research Center MATH+, will continue her work as part of this interdisciplinary initiative that spans Berlin’s major universities and research institutes. MATH+ explores application-driven mathematical research, focusing on data-driven challenges in life sciences, materials science, energy systems, and even the humanities. The cluster, originally launched in 2019, has now secured an extension for another seven years, starting January 2026, with funding provided by the DFG.
With this renewed support, MATH+ aims to deepen its impact by developing innovative mathematical methods for complex, data-intensive problems, continuing its strong tradition built on the legacy of Matheon and the Berlin Mathematical School.
Meanwhile, Prof. Matthew Larkum, expert in cortical information processing and neuronal plasticity, is a principal investigator in the Cluster of Excellence NeuroCure. Hosted by Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, NeuroCure investigates the biological underpinnings of neurological and psychiatric disorders and emphasizes the translation of basic research into clinical applications.
With its focus on diseases such as stroke, dementia, schizophrenia, and epilepsy, NeuroCure benefits from a tight integration of laboratory research and clinical practice. The cluster’s renewed funding will enable further exploration of gene and cell therapies, foster new collaborations, and strengthen Berlin’s role as a leader in neuroscience.
We congratulate Professors Draxl and Larkum on their involvement in these outstanding collaborative efforts that contribute significantly to Berlin’s scientific excellence.
