Abstract:
I will discuss old and more recent ideas concerned with “Planckian scattering” in condensed matter systems, ranging from comments by Peierls on conventional metals in the 30’s to recent studies of cuprates and other strange metals. The key suggestion is that there may be fundamental constraints on dissipative many-body dynamics that pertain beyond the quasiparticle paradigm. I will describe work aiming to elucidate these constraints from experiments, solvable theoretical models, and the general formalism of quantum statistical physics.
